Session Four: Fundraising and Resource Development

Fundraising is one of the scariest topics for potential board members. Fundraising is not just about asking for money, it's about asking others to help support a cause you are passionate about.  Money equals programs and programs help people!

Materials for this session includes a podcast from joangarry.com

To complete this section, listen to the podcast before moving onto our recorded interview with local board expert Jen Arends and Angelina Perez.

Session Five: Engaging a Diverse Community/Civic Engagement

An organization is only as strong as a board and strong boards have a variety of voices around the table. Having a diverse board can bring fresh new ideas that strengthen organizations and lead to creative problem-solving.

Materials include a podcast from joangarry.com about obstacles in creating a diverse board.

To complete this section, listen to the podcast and read the articles before moving onto our recorded interview with local board expert Colleen Frein.

Session Six: Financial Management and Fiduciary Responsibility

Board members act as trustees of the organization's assets and must exercise due diligence and oversight to ensure that the organization is well managed. While board members do not have to be CPA's to be on the board, it is important that each board member is able to read financial statements and understand the financial situation their organization is in.

Materials include a podcast from joangarry.com and readings around the fiduciary duties of nonprofits and the responsibilities that board members take on when they join a nonprofit board.

To complete this section, listen to the podcast and read the articles before moving onto our recorded interview with local board expert Tim Schupick.
