Venture Grants

Purpose

To provide a means for the United Way of North Central Iowa to (1) provide funding for identified community problems not funded through the United Way Member Agency Allocation, (2) encourage the development of new innovative social services programs, and (3) fund unanticipated demand for basic need services.

Funding

Funds designated for Venture Grants will be determined by the United Way of North Central Iowa Board of Directors. A Review Committee made up of a small number of Agency Directors and Board of Directors review the applications and make a recommendation to the full local Board of Directors who makes the final funding decisions.

Priority Areas

Proposals that include one or more of the following will receive preferred consideration:
  • Community messaging and community awareness related to prevention and reduction of substance abuse.
  • Workplace education related to substance abuse.
  • Strengthening mentoring/role-modeling programs for youth.
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles for youth.
  • Developing a central point of contact/common process for intake for all health and human services in the United Way service area.
  • Enhancing public and private transportation, especially as it relates to provision of health and human services.
  • Enhancing services to the homeless.
  • Increasing availability of dental services to the underserved.

Timeframe

Grants will be made on a one-time basis covering a 12-month period. Venture Grant projects may be considered for continued funding through the regular United Way Fund Distribution process if ongoing United Way funding is necessary. A progress report will be required six months following first notice of approval with a final results/outcome report due one year from initial award. More frequent progress reports may be required.
