Health is too often thought in terms of treating disease, doctor appointments, and access to healthcare, all of which are important when assessing the health of a population, however, research has shown that health does not exist in a vacuum. A person's health can vary widely depending on their homes, their work, their neighborhoods, and the community in which they live. The Social Determinants of Health refer to the conditions in the environment in which people are born and live their lives that can affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks.
United Way of North Central Iowa aims to improve people’s health. Our targets will be to create safe communities for youth and families, improve access to health care, and improve the mental health of our community. We hope to show a reduction in abuse and re-abuse, increased awareness and access to health care resources, and increased awareness of mental health resources and access to care.
