Hello, I would like to introduce myself. I am the woman who sits next to you in church and participates in church activities and groups. I am the friendly lady who exercises beside you at the pool and at the YMCA. I am the woman who you see going to the movies with my friends or having coffee at the local restaurant. I am the woman who has Bi-Polar disorder, a form of mental illness.

Chief Professional Officer 

Jennifer has worked as the Chief Professional Officer at United Way since January 2003. Since then, Jennifer has been dedicated to enhancing the Health and Human Services in north central Iowa. She volunteers on many local committees that focus on children, education, income enhancement and health for everyone. She advocates at the local and state level to ensure the community's concerns are addressed. She gives her time and many talents to United Way of North Central Iowa to ensure that we are advancing the common good. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys being on her land with her family.

Regional Coordinator (Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Mitchell) and Resource Development Coordinator

Alex Kuhn grew up on a family farm south of Charles City. He graduated from Iowa State University in 2005 where he studied Political Science and Education. Before joining United Way staff in June, he worked in Des Moines as a legislative clerk in the Iowa House of Representatives for the U.S. Senator Tom Harkin. Alex enjoys working on his farm and spending time with his wife Melissa and their sons, Rylan and Collan.

Regional Coordinator (Butler, Franklin, Kossuth) and Community Impact Coordinator

Michelle Jurgens grew up in Dougherty on her family's farm and graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School. She moved to Iowa City and studied Communication Studies (B.A.) with a minor in Human Relations. She graduated from University of Iowa in December of 2007. Michelle has been with United Way of North Central Iowa since March of 2008. In April, 2010, she married Sheldon Jurgens and they reside on a farm west of Sheffield. Michelle values the work she is able to do with United Way and loves cheering on the Hawkeyes!

Executive Assistant

Corinne Walker has been with United Way of North Central Iowa since fall of 2005. She lives in Nora Springs with her husband, Don. They have two children, Tyrell and Whitney. Corinne enjoys all of the people involved with United Way and being part of an organization that is making a difference in north central Iowa.

Suicide Prevention Coordinator

Wendy Balles grew up in Pueblo, Colorado and graduated from East High School. She graduated from Baker College Online with an Associates degree in Web Design. In 2006, Wendy and her daughter, Desede, moved to Mason City to be near her family. She works with the family business, Mason City Roofing, as the Advertising Manager. As a survivor of her brother's suicide in 2004, Wendy has been involved in many Suicide Prevention efforts. She enjoys helping others and spending time with her family, especially her chidlren Desede and Noah.
